The extraordinary heart of Fredric C. Shean stopped beating the evening of October 5, 2015. Fred was an unparalleled husband, father, grandfather, doctor, teacher and friend. He loved football, rugby, the beach and anything he could do from the back of a horse. Fred played football for UCLA and was inducted into the UCLA Rugby Hall of Fame.
Other than his family, his passion was his work. A graduate of the UCLA School of Medicine and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital's residency program, he completed a cardiology fellowship and a senior fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was a consummate doctor and teacher who stayed active in the practice of cardiology at the University of Utah and VA Hospitals until the time of his death. Fred was awarded Outstanding Teaching Awards by the U of U Department of Internal Medicine in 1997-1998 and 2002-2003 and the Attending of the Year award from the U of U Cardiology Fellows every year from 1997 through 2008. While a partner at the Specialty Medical Clinic in La Jolla, California, Fred served as Chief of Staff, Chief of Cardiology, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Scripps Hospitals.
Fred met his wife, Kay, while moving cattle for the Hunewill Ranch in Bridgeport, California. It was a union of two perfectly matched partners. He is survived by Kay, sons Greg (Meg) Shean, Jeff (Becky) Shean, Matt (Weiwei) Shean, stepdaughters Elizabeth Howell (Rick Scotson), Stephanie Howell (Eric Petersen), and ten amazing grandchildren in whom he rejoiced every single day.
There will be a celebration of this wonderful man at Starks Funeral Parlor on Tuesday October 13th from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., located at 3651 S. 900 E., Salt Lake City, UT. Casual attire heartily recommended. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the University of Utah School of Medicine, UCLA Rugby or Plan-B Theatre Company.
