Devoted husband, father, friend, and handyman

During the early morning hours of February 12th, 2024, Jerald “Jerry” Peter Hanten passed away while visiting a friend in Arizona. Jerry was 69 years old.  Jerry was born June 4th, 1954 in Mitchell, SD to Alvin and Lorraine Hanten. Growing up on a farm, Jerry learned from a very early age the importance of a strong work ethic and being self-reliant. As a result, he was a talented athlete in his high school and college years, and an exceptional handyman.

In 1976, Jerry graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. Jerry would spend the next 38 years working for various mining companies across the western United States, and was by all accounts an expert in his field. Jerry left the mining industry in 2014 to pursue his passion for home improvement, which led to him becoming a private contractor, and working for Home Depot right up until his passing.  Shortly after graduating from SDSMT, Jerry married the love of his life, Julie Hintze, on September 4th, 1976. They were married for 48 years, and had three children: Katherine (Kathy), Peter, and Elizabeth (Beth).

Besides being a hard-working, devoted husband and father, Jerry was a man of faith, and a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 40 years. In his time with the K.O.C., Jerry held many roles with the Knights, including State Deputy from 2014-2016, and his dedication to selfless service for others and the organization was an inspiration for many. When he wasn’t busy helping those around him, Jerry loved riding his motorcycle, traveling, enjoying the company of friends and family, and living his best life.

Jerry is survived by his wife Julie, his children, Katherine (Nathan) Richardson, Peter (Jen) Hanten, and Elizabeth (Nicholas) Teynor; nine grandchildren; his sister Deb, his brother Kevin, sister-in-law Barb; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Alvin and Lorraine Hanten, twin sons Nicholas and John, and grand-daughter Tillie.

Jerry will be remembered for his love of life, his willingness to help others, his love for family and friends, and for being the guy who could literally build and fix anything.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 22nd, 10:30 AM, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 9757 South 1700 East, in Sandy. Instead of flowers, Jerry’s family would prefer you consider donating to your local Veterans Association, Salt Lake City VA Fisher House, and/or the American Heart Association.
