Geneva Markisich Powell

Our wonderful mom and grandma, Geneva Lillian Markisich Powell shed the bonds that have kept her from doing things she loved on Wednesday, February 10th, 2010, in Salt Lake City, UT of causes incident to age.

Geneva was born March 14th, 1933, in Rock Springs, WY the first daughter of George and Florence Gunyon Markisich.  She had an entrepreneurial spirit and spent her life in the pursuit of new, exciting and profitable ventures.  Neva was the first woman licensed general contractor in Wyoming and ran numerous businesses throughout her lifetime.

She loved all sports and was an avid Jazz fan.  She traveled the country, lived oversees and enjoyed unusual hobbies including panning for gold in Alaska.  Above all else, Neva was the most proud of her children George Powell and Lori Ann Williams.  She loved them above all else, extolling their successes to everyone she met.  She will be remembered for her generosity of spirit and always felt that as “matriarch” it was her duty to care for all.

While her health problems may have won their battle, they cannot take away the love, faith and spirit our mother instilled in us from birth.  She leaves us with the important lessons of a strong work ethic, family bond and true courage in the face of adversity, which we will cherish forever, along with the wonderful memories of our life with her.

Geneva is survived by her son and daughter-in-law George and Janelle Powell; daughter Lori Williams; grandchildren Jessica Williams, Danielle Williams, Hannah Powell, Sarah Powell, Ethan Powell; sisters Veronica Trujillo and Lila Martinez, brother George Markisich Jr.; as well as many nieces and nephews who adored their “Aunt Neva”.  She is preceded in death by her parents.

A celebration of Geneva’s life will be held on Wednesday, February 17th from 6 to 8 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City.  A graveside service will be held on Thursday, February 18th at 11:00 AM at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South, Salt Lake City.

Mom, we love you forever and ever.
