He graduated from East High School where he was voted "Mr. Touchdown" in 1952 and later attended the University of Utah.  He married Josephine Urevig in 1956.  They enjoyed over 60 happy years together while raising 5 children.

After starting out as a heavy machinery salesman, he built up his own filter company to the point he was able to retire in his early 50's.  He was a man's man.  He was a lifelong hunter, adventurer, horseshoe champ, wildflower expert and avid outdoorsman.  He could build anything, which included the family cabin in Holiday Park and a 35 ft. sailboat, "Cold Duck". He was an ocean sailor and a Commander in the Coastguard Auxiliary.  Tom and Jo spent the summers camping and hiking and the winters in Yuma, AZ for the last 25 years.

He is survived by his wife and five children: Timothy (Terese), Jennifer Starr (Kevin), Mary Beth Yenna (Herbert Singleton), Ted (Cindie), and William (Bret Hanna), 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Joel and Randall. Preceded in death by parents and brother James.
