Nancy Vollum Swanson passed away on July 29 after a lengthy and courageous bout with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 54 years Stephen R Swanson, son Eric R Swanson, MD, granddaughters Abigail and Grace, her two brothers Jay and John Vollum and their families, and brothers-in-law Larry and Don Swanson and families. Nancy was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota and grew up there. When young she spent many happy summers at the family cabin in northern Minnesota. She graduated from the University of Minnesota, where she was a member of Alpha Phi sorority. Upon graduation she married Steve in 1962 and they moved to Salt Lake City.

Nancy affiliated with the University of Utah Alpha Phi Sorority and worked with the chapter, taught first grade in Granger, UT, was a long time docent at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and affiliated with the Mary Meigs Atwater Weavers guild. In addition to work, their early married years were full of sailing and camping adventures. She learned to ski Utah's wonderful snow and loved the sport. Travel was a big part of her life and she was fortunate to spend time in 59 different countries, with Africa easily a favorite destination, and lived in Italy for several months.

Nancy loved collecting antiques and acquired an extensive collection of antique buttons. She later developed her talents as an artist, and exhibited her paintings in many shows and galleries while working in an art studio. A life-long bridge player, she continued to play almost to the end. She loved going to all her granddaughters' activities and working with them on craft projects. They adored their grandmother and really enjoyed spending time with her. After getting a diagnosis of cancer with 6 months to 2 years to live, she stretched that time to 6 years , savoring each and every day.

Nancy had many wonderful friends who stood by her through her final days. We are so grateful for the support of these friends and for the care given by Dr Saundra Buys and staff at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the Community Nursing Services. Nancy will be missed by all who knew her.

There will be a private interment for family at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery at 2350 E 1300 S, Salt Lake City, on Tuesday August 9 at 10am. A Celebration of life will be held at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East Salt Lake City, complimentary valet parking will be available on the North side of the building.
