Michael Taylor Corbett
January 30, 1941 - November 26, 2014
Mike Corbett called everything as he saw it. No one can deny that he was a teller of tales and a gifted giver of nicknames. "Rose Colored Glasses, Road Warrior, Rip Van Winkle, and Zippity Doo Dah Day" ...you know who you are. His stories and nicknames were a reflection of how he perceived the world in his own unique way.
Michael Taylor Corbett fought a short battle with liver cancer caused by hemochromatosis and passed away on November 26, 2014 in the same manner he lived his life, with courage. Michael was born in Midvale, Utah on January 30, 1941 to Ruth Alice Taylor and William Corbett. He grew up on the family farm with his parents, grandparents, and sister. He graduated from Jordan High in 1959, served in the Army Reserves from which he received an honorable discharge in 1966. Michael married the love of his life Launa Andrus on July 1, 1968 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were married forty-six years. Together they had three children; Brenda, Michael, and Andrea.
He worked as the head mechanical foreman for IML Trucking from 1964-1983. After leaving IML he owned several successful businesses before retiring. In his later years, he spent many hours rebuilding, from scratch, his 1929 Ford Model A. In the summers Mike and Launa could be found at many of the local car shows, where he was recognized with several awards for his attention to detail.
Mike had a zest for life, a passion for anything with a motor, and a love for family and people. Not necessarily in that order. His favorite times were spent with family and friends camping, fishing, boating, and four wheeling. Mike was a master mechanic and enjoyed tinkering with all types of machinery including cars, motorcycles, go-carts, and four wheelers.
Mike is survived by his wife Launa; children Brenda, Michael (Amber), Andrea (Tanner) Scott; grandchildren Samantha, Kayden, Annaliese, Tegan and Riley; his sister Barbara (Richard) Town, and many family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Ruth and William Corbett and his in-laws Keith and Elaine Andrus.
Dad, Thank you for being an amazing father, grandfather, brother, friend, and husband to our mother. You have taught us many values including; the importance of hard work, confidence, loyalty, compassion and most of all love. All these things, big and small, live within us and will always be a part of us.
We would like to express our gratitude to our family and friends for their outpouring of love and support. We wish to thank all the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and A Step Forward Home Health. A special thanks to Dr. G Weldon Gilcrease, Jamie Fendler, Katie Lewis, and Mauricio Covarrubias for their devotion to Mike in his last days.
Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing and funeral services. The viewing will be on Friday, December 5th 2014 at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Starks Funeral Parlor. Interment will follow at Elysian Gardens 1074 E. 4580 S. Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
