Alex William Mathie

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, Alex passed away peacefully at his home with his wife by his side, just two days before their 60th wedding anniversary, on September 30, 2014.

Alex was born August 21, 1936 in Huntington, UT to Ailena and Samuel Mathie.  He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce, and together they raised a beautiful family. In his early years, he operated heavy machinery in the Kaiser Steel coal mine in Sunnyside, Utah. He later became a well-respected Superintendent for Horn Zwick and Alder Construction Companies.  He mastered many trades and became the go-to person for his family and everyone he knew.  There was nothing he couldn't build or fix.  He loved being home with his family, visiting the cabin, fishing and boating.  Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of his family.  Alex built homes, overpasses, buildings and bridges, but most of all, character in others.

He leaves behind his wife Joyce; children Terri (Russ) Oliver, Debbie (Jody) Chidester, Kelly (BJ) Harris, Julie (Daniel) Verrinder; 9 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters Manell (John) Piccolo, Lauretta Page, and brother Gordon (Jeanine) Mathie.

Preceded in death by parents, and brothers Lamar Mathie and Robert LeGrande Mathie.

A Celebration of Alex's Life will be held on Sunday, October 5th from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, where complimentary valet parking will be provided on the north side of the building.  Funeral Service will be held on Monday, October 6th at 11:00 AM at the Brookshire Ward, 3487 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Alex's name to Primary Children's Hospital, who have given incredible care to his great grandson, Tye Schulz. https://primarychildrens.thankyou4caring.org
