Mark Scott Maddox, 54, born 30 October 1959 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to James Scott Maddox and Alice NaRee Argyle Maddox, died 23 August 2014 in Murray, Utah, from Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Mark attended primary and secondary schools in Salt Lake City, Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Colony, Kansas. He graduated in 1983 from University of Kansas with a Bachelor degree.

In his quiet but effective mode of operation, having just endured two weeks in the ICU of a local hospital because of adverse side-effects related to chemotherapy, and when a professional team of medical doctors declared they had no further effective treatments for his condition, Mark took a swift and totally unexpected permanent leave of absence from his job and other functions of life. At the time of his death, Mark was employed by the Salt Lake County Health Department.

Mark's favorite activities were backpacking, camping, canoeing, river running, gardening, and playing his banjo with friends around the campfire. He had a special interest in researching and discovering ancient historical sites. Mark loved dogs and tending his fishpond. He was one of the kindest persons ever and was described as being a big lovable teddy bear. Most unique about Mark was his wry sense of humor.

Mark is survived by his life companion Millie Lorbeck; his father J. Scott and step-mother Ruth Popescu-Maddox; sisters Jeneal (Steve) Bain and Ann (Dana) Smith; nieces Cody and Marla Bain, Katie (Nolan) Samuels, and Andrea Smith. Family connections include Millie's daughters Antoinette Tuscano and Tanya Swingle and grandchildren Gracey and Parker. He is also survived by great-nephew Denton, great-niece Nicole, and many friends, associates, aunts, uncles and cousins. Mark was preceded in death by his mother, brother Craig Maddox, and his grandparents James & Fay Burt Maddox and Ira & Alice Howard Argyle.

A celebration of Mark's life will be held on Sunday, 7 September 2014, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, where complimentary valet parking will be provided on the north side of the building. Graveside committal of ashes will be Monday, 8 September 2014, at 10:30 AM at Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 East 4580 South, Millcreek, Utah.
