Mary Ellen Hoffman Hyland

July 27, 1951 - December 29, 2022
Mary Ellen Hoffman Hyland

Mary Ellen Hoffman Hyland was born in the old St. Mark's Hospital on July 27, 1951 to James and Doris Hoffman. She died peacefully in her sleep at home on December 29, 2022, after cheerfully enduring years of poor health, and more recently prolonged mobility problems. She was educated at St. Ann's elementary school, St. Mary of the Wasatch High School and the University of Utah where she earned a degree in Sociology. She married Patrick J. Hyland at the U of U Newman Center (St. Catherine of Sienna) on May 29, 1971. They had 4 children and 51 happy years together. Her favorite times were Christmas, and long summer days camping in the Unitas with family and friends.

Mary was one of the kindest people you will ever meet. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. She had a particular soft spot for children, one of the many reasons she excelled at her job at the Office of Recovery Services, collecting delinquent court-ordered child support. She always said (quite correctly) that it was her way of helping children in need. She was a life-long parishioner at St.Ann's Catholic Church, Salt Lake City, and cherished the many friends that she has there.

She is survived by her beloved family: her husband, her four children Jennifer Zufelt (James) Julianne Langford (Chris) Gary Hyland (Crystal) and Peter Hyland (Breanna); grandchildren Samantha, Aubry, Elena, James, Grace, Willow and Leelou: great-grandchildren Gage and Ryker; and her brother George Hoffman (Dorothy)....(and her "other brother", his friend Michael Derbidge). Preceded in death by her parents, and several beloved cats.

Funeral Mass will be on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 12:00 P.M. at St Ann Catholic Church, 2119 S 400 E, Salt Lake City. Friends and family may gather an hour prior. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 11:30 A.M.
